ABOUT HERNIAS

Understanding hernia

  • What is an hernia?

A hernia is a medical condition that occurs when internal organs or fatty tissue pass through a weakness or opening in the muscle wall or tissue that normally contains them.

Hernia most often develops in the abdominal wall, which extends from just below your sternum to your groin. This wall acts as a shield for your organs, similar to the way a tire protects an inner tube.

  • What causes a hernia?
  • What causes a hernia ?

Genetic predisposition

An area of your abdominal wall may be inherently weaker from birth, predisposing you to abdominal hernia.

Environmental
and lifestyle factors

Over time, your abdominal wall can weaken due to various factors such as physical stress, injury, pregnancy, aging, smoking and obesity. These factors can put additional pressure on the abdominal wall, leading to its weakening and the development of a hernia.

Previous abdominal
surgery

If you have undergone abdominal surgery in the past, there is a risk of developing a hernia at the site of the previous surgical incision. Scarring can weaken the abdominal wall and make it more susceptible to tearing or distension, thus promoting the formation of a hernia.
